The WoodBrik House that Midway Built:
BIG HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE
(click on pictures to see enlargements)
There is a big house on the prairie near Greeley, Colorado, (5,000 square feet) that costs an average of $50 per month to heat, based on homeowner records from the winter of 1996 - 1997. In the summer, it requires no air conditioning. Why? Because this beautiful ranch style stucco home was built using the WoodBrik recycled building material. Other exterior finishes are feasible.
The exterior walls of this new house are built with WoodBrik, the tradename of a block made 100% from waste. The raw materials include fly ash from coal-burning power plants and ground-up lumber scraps, with a recycled binder. The resulting 12-inch-thick walls are fireproof, self-insulating at R-19, water resistant, interlocking and stackable without mortar. The blocks themselves can be sawed or milled with ordinary tools of the carpenter's trade, and will hold a nail or
a screw like wood does.
WoodBrik bears loads up to 1,200 pounds per square inch. What's more, WoodBrik in a single instance replaces stud lumber or concrete block, in-wall insulation, exterior wooden panels and siding, and interior drywall. That's because once the walls are assembled like "Adult Lego," they can be directly
sealed and painted or textured with colored cement or plaster
finishes.
The completed wall is cost-competitive or cheaper than
with any other type of construction, and definitely stronger.
The strength comes from its mass and the capability to bolt
the entire wall to the concrete footings. It also affords bolting
of the wooden roof trusses to the foundation.
